Wherever you see "jaklumen", that's me. The username is still unique as of 2016, so it's just me, and only me. It's the real me, because I'm bad at faking otherwise.

  1. Jak, don’t let that placard define you. It’s just permission to use a parking spot to make your life easier. It’s not an endorsement of you as “handicapped” or a victim. I hope it makes your day-to-day life easier. It’s great that you are proactive about things that provide you with self-care. We all need that in life! But still, it doesn’t define you. 🙂 Brenda Gregory Yuen

    • I know, Brenda. I’m just very proud- at least one friend asked why I’d waited until now, since I’d had these health issues so long.

I used to push empty shopping carts (even if I never filled them) just to put off using the electric motorized ones. I didn’t use them until going to Wal-Mart late one night (I didn’t want anyone to see), and until the night crew assured me it was no big deal.

Logically, I know that it’s to make my life easier, but emotionally, I still deeply fear the stigma. Probably the electric shopping carts, more– already some people DELIBERATELY attach them to obesity, implying that if obese people didn’t use them, their use would be very rare. (Because I am technically obese, it’s hard to ignore this attitude.)
