Good news

Dad got home today.

To summarize: The specialist believes he may have had a relapse/reoccurence of TM, even though the scans showed nothing.  She made a number of recommendations for him to follow up with at home and with his neurologist here, which include a round of steroids.  They are options he can pursue regardless of how things are, so he has some viable choices now.

  1. This is good news. Even if it doesn't seem that way. Now, he has options that he didn't have before. Right? What is TM?I hope he gets better and does nothing but improve and work towards healing.

  2. What is TM?Short answer: it has symptoms like MS, but for very different reasons.Long answer: transverse myelitis, which means that the nerve sheathing (myelin) is irritated. Transverse means that it is irritated through the whole thickness of the myelin, not just the surface. He's dealt with symptoms for at least 18 years or so. I can't remember when they actually made the diagnosis; it was a little more recent than that. They found a lesion in his spinal cord.Again, the comparison to MS is simply easier as more people have a vague idea at least what that is. He has very good support with the MS Society group here; they are a good bunch of people. I discovered them and their aquatics class at my gym first; they accepted me right away although I obviously don't have MS. I was not the least bit surprised that they would be a great resource for my father.
